Glenn Holman

Glenn Holman !
From Airfix kits to meditation on failure and friendship, to Ancient Greek philosophy, Glenn
Holman’s work explores the pathos and absurdity of everyday life, the small events and
activities that make up our days and the people and objects to which we bizarrely ascribe
significance, but which come to define our existence.

He decided that he wanted to be an artist after watching the film ‘Lust for Life’ one Sunday
afternoon as a boy, and since then has always been struck by the oddity and absurdity of
the art making process and life as an artist in general. The essentially absurd subject
matter of his work is approached with a high-minded seriousness and meticulous attention
to detail. He received funding from the Arts Council An Chomhairle Ealaion to produce his
book Spitfire which can be seen as an exploration of how our memories are a construction,
mediated by personal choice, acquired knowledge and self mythologising. How we choose
to remember, forget or reconfigure our personal histories at Will to construct the identity we
wish to project.

Alternatively, Spitfire could be simply be seen as a hymn to how 21 pale blue plastic parts
can make a four year old boy very, very happy. !

He has work in major collections in the UK and abroad including the Tate Gallery, British
Library and the National Irish Visual Arts Library (NIVAL)

He co-founded Floating World along with Andy Parsons in 2003 as it seemed like a good
idea at the time and is still constantly surprised and delighted at its unexpected success
and critical acclaim. Along with artists books he also works in sculpture, painting and
drawing. He has also made video work, but didn’t like it much. !!
