Floating World presented a survey of recent collaborative projects with particular emphasis on the project ‘Unfolding The Archive: Floating World artists respond to the collections at NIVAL and the F.E. McWilliam Gallery and Studio’. The exhibition was curated by Donna Romano, Librarian at NCAD and Dr. Riann Coulter, Curator of the F.E. McWilliam Gallery & Studio. In addition to giving an illustrated talk we displayed a selection of works from the exhibition and other recent projects.
We also screened ‘Raft’, a new short film based on the making of the artists book of the same name by Andy Parsons. The film presents the making of a raft which was used as a floating drawing board on Lough Gill in 2015. The raft was made in stages. Each stage in its construction was detailed in an ink drawing that became a new page in the book. This process of making a large physical object over a long period of time, specifically for the outcome to be a a lightweight endlessly reproducible photocopied book, illustrates the way Floating World have used the book medium to explore notions of permanence and value. Raft was filmed by Rachel Webb, with additional filming by Andy Parsons. The Raft was made with the help of Rachel Webb, John O’Kane and Jim Maidment.
